Triune –three parts in one that functions independently from the other.

  • God in three persons

    • The word “Trinity” is not found in the Bible, but the principle of plurality since creation is revealed in scripture:

      • Genesis 1:1-2 “1 In the beginning God [Elohim] created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.”

      • Genesis 1:26 “Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, …”

      • Genesis 11:7 "Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other."

      • Deuteronomy 6:4 “Hear, O Israel: The LORD [YHWH] our God [Elohim], the LORD is one.”

      • Isaiah 9:6 “For to us a child is born, to us a son [Jesus] is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor [Holy Spirit], Mighty God [El or God the Father], Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace [Jesus].”

      • Revelation 1:4-5 “4 To the seven churches in the province of Asia: Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come [God the Father], and from the seven spirits before his throne [Holy Spirit], 5 and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth.”

      • Revelation 4:4-6 “4 Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come [God], and from the seven spirits before his throne [Holy Spirit], 5 and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, 6 and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father—to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen.”

    • All three in one place:

      • Matthew 3:16-17 “16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water.  At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him.  17 And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love, with him I am well pleased.’”

    • Jesus explains:

      • John 14:16-17 “16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever – 17 the Spirit of truth.

      • Matthew 28:19 “Therefore go make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,…

    • Jesus refers to God the Father as his Father and his God:

      • Mark 15:34 "And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”)."

      • John 20:17 "Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’

    • Separate "holiest" for each part of Trinity

      • Revelation 4:8 "... Day and night they never stop saying: “ ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,’ who was, and is, and is to come.”

        • Father, Son and Holy Spirit are attested at "holiest"

  • These three are separate from the created continuum of time, space and matter.

Westminster Cataclysm regarding “What is God?”:  “God is a Spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable in his being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth.”

 

  • Names of God

    • “Elohim” in Hebrew means “God” the one true God or ”the judges”. Masculine plural form [two or more in number, not “gods”] from the masculine singular word “Eloah”.

    • “El” in Hebrew means “God”. Masculine, singular form of general term for the Creator, mighty, powerful and distant.

    • “Pater" in Greek means "the Father”, begetter, originator, progenitor with intimate connection and relationship.

    • “LORD” in Hebrew is “Yehowah” or “YHWH” [known as the tetragrammaton]. God’s divine and personal name in context of having a relationship with His people. Also known as “the Name” since his name is too sacred to pronounce. YEH = "He will be", OW = "is being" and AH = "He was". YHWH literally means "I am now, and will continue to be in the future, that which I am now, and will be continue to be in the future". It can also be spelled as "Jehovah" although there is not "J" sound in Hebrew.

      • "I AM"

        • Exodus 3:13-15 “13 Moses said to God, "Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' and they ask me, 'What is his name?' Then what shall I tell them? 14 God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you. 15 God also said to Moses, "Say to the Israelites, 'The LORD, the God of your fathers--the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob--has sent me to you.' "This is my name forever, the name you shall call me from generation to generation."

      • The Ancient of Days (Always in existence):

        • Psalms 90:2 “Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.”

        • Isaiah 43:13 “Yes, and from ancient days I am he. No one can deliver out of my hand. When I act, who can reverse it?”

        • Daniel 7:9-10, 13 “9 As I looked, thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days took his seat. His clothing was as white as snow; the hair of his head was white like wool. His throne was flaming with fire, and its wheels were all ablaze. 10 A river of fire was flowing, coming out from before him. Thousands upon thousands attended him; ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him. The court was seated, and the books were opened ... 13 In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like the son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power…”.

    • "kurios theos pantokratōr" means "LORD God Almighty"

      • Revelation 4:8 "Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying: “ ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,’ who was, and is, and is to come.”

        • "El Shaddai" in Hebrew

    • the "God Most High"

      • Used by or for those outside of God's chosen people; Gentiles who had other gods that they worshiped. Signifies that God is the God above all false gods worshiped.

      • "le·'el - el·yo·vn" (God Most High) or "il·la·'ah - e·la·ha" (Most High God)

      • Genesis 14:17-24 "17 After Abram returned from defeating Kedorlaomer and the kings allied with him, the king of Sodom came out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley). 18 Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High, 19 and he blessed Abram, saying, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. 20 And praise be to God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand.” Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything. 21 The king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the people and keep the goods for yourself.” 22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “With raised hand I have sworn an oath to the Lord, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth, 23 that I will accept nothing belonging to you, not even a thread or the strap of a sandal, so that you will never be able to say, ‘I made Abram rich.’ 24 I will accept nothing but what my men have eaten and the share that belongs to the men who went with me—to Aner, Eshkol and Mamre. Let them have their share.”

      • Psalm 83:18 "Let them [nations who were enemies of God] know that you, whose name is the Lord — that you alone are the Most High over all the earth."

      • Psalm 97:9 "For you, Lord, are the Most High over all the earth; you are exalted far above all gods."

      • Daniel 4:1-2, 17, 24-25, 34 "1 King Nebuchadnezzar, to the nations and peoples of every language, who live in all the earth: May you prosper greatly! 2 It is my pleasure to tell you about the miraculous signs and wonders that the Most High God has performed for me. ... 17 “‘The decision is announced by messengers, the holy ones declare the verdict, so that the living may know that the Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes and sets over them the lowliest of people.’ ... 24 “This is the interpretation, Your Majesty, and this is the decree the Most High has issued against my lord the king: 25 You will be driven away from people and will live with the wild animals; you will eat grass like the ox and be drenched with the dew of heaven. Seven times will pass by for you until you acknowledge that the Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes. ... 34 At the end of that time, I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes toward heaven, and my sanity was restored. Then I praised the Most High; I honored and glorified him who lives forever."

      • Mark 5:6-7 "6 When he [man possessed by 1000 demons] saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him. 7 He shouted at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God’s name don’t torture me!”
         

  • God is spirit, cloud-like, glorious radiance as a rainbow, on a heavenly throne:

    • Exodus 24:15-18 “15 When Moses went up on the mountain, the cloud covered it, 16 and the glory of the Lord settled on Mount Sinai. For six days the cloud covered the mountain, and on the seventh day the Lord called to Moses from within the cloud. 17 To the Israelites the glory of the Lord looked like a consuming fire on top of the mountain. 18 Then Moses entered the cloud as he went on up the mountain. And he stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights.”

    • Numbers 23:19, “God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?”

    • Ezekiel 1:26-28 “26 Above the vault over their heads was what looked like a throne of lapis lazuli, and high above on the throne was a figure like that of a man. 27 I saw that from what appeared to be his waist up he looked like glowing metal, as if full of fire, and that from there down he looked like fire; and brilliant light surrounded him. 28 Like the appearance of a rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the radiance around him. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord.”

    • Ezekiel 10:1,4,20 “1 I looked, and I saw the likeness of a throne of lapis lazuli above the vault that was over the heads of the cherubim. 4 Then the glory of the Lord rose from above the cherubim and moved to the threshold of the temple. The cloud filled the temple, and the court was full of the radiance of the glory of the Lord. 20 These were the living creatures I had seen beneath the God of Israel by the Kebar River, and I realized that they were cherubim.”

    • Psalms 123:1-2 “1 I lift up my eyes to you, to you who sit enthroned in heaven. 2 As the eyes of slaves look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a female slave look to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, till he shows us his mercy.”

    • John 4:24 “God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”

    • 1 Timothy 6:15-16 "15 ... God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see."

    • Revelation 4:2-11 “2 At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it. 3 And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and ruby. A rainbow that shone like an emerald encircled the throne. 4 Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones and seated on them were twenty-four elders. They were dressed in white and had crowns of gold on their heads. 5 From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings, and peals of thunder. In front of the throne, seven lamps were blazing. These are the seven spirits of God. 6 Also in front of the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal. In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, and they were covered with eyes, in front and in back. 7 The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle. 8 Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying:” ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,’ who was, and is, and is to come.” 9 Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say: 11 “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.”

  • God is spirit and directs His Holy Spirit:

    • Numbers 11:17 “I will come down and speak with you there, and I will take some of the power of the Spirit that is on you and put it on them. They will share the burden of the people with you so that you will not have to carry it alone.”

  • Supreme to all things, including Jesus:

    • Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning God (“Elohim”) created the heavens and earth.”

    • 1 Corinthians 15:27 “For he “has put everything under his feet.” Now when it says that “everything” has been put under him, it is clear that this does not include God himself, who put everything under Christ.”

    • 2 Corinthians 11:31 “The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, who is to be praised forever, knows that I am not lying.”

  • God is Truth (absolute truth requires us to accept responsibility)

    • Psalm 31:5 “Into your hands I commit my spirit; deliver me, LORD, my faithful God.”

    • John 17:17 “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.

  • Evidence of God is made clear to man:

    • Romans 1: 18-20, “18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”

    • 2 Peter 1:3, “His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.”

  • There is only one (1) God

    • Deuteronomy 6:4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.”

    • Isaiah 43:10 “’You are my witnesses,’ declares the Lord, ‘and my servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor will there be one after me.’”

    • Isaiah 44:6 “This is what the Lord says, Israel’s King and Redeemer, the Lord Almighty: ‘I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God.”

    • 1 Timothy 2:5 “For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, …”

  • God and Heaven are synonymous

  • God orchestrates the good and bad?

    • Exodus 4:10-11 "10 Moses said to the Lord, “Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.” 11 The Lord said to him, “Who gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute? Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, the Lord?"

    • Deuteronomy 30:19 "This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live."

    • Deuteronomy 32:39 "“See now that I myself am he! There is no god besides me. I put to death and I bring to life, I have wounded and I will heal, and no one can deliver out of my hand."

    • 1 Samuel 2:6-8 "6 “The Lord brings death and makes alive; he brings down to the grave and raises up. 7 The Lord sends poverty and wealth; he humbles and he exalts. 8 He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes and has them inherit a throne of honor."

    • 1 Samuel 15:29 "He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie or change his mind; for he is not a human being, that he should change his mind."

    • 1 Samuel 18:10 "The next day an evil spirit from God came forcefully on Saul. He was prophesying in his house, while David was playing the lyre, as he usually did. Saul had a spear in his hand"

    • 1 Kings 17:20 " Then he cried out to the Lord, “Lord my God, have you brought tragedy even on this widow I am staying with, by causing her son to die?"

    • 2 Chronicles 25:8 "Even if you go and fight courageously in battle, God will overthrow you before the enemy, for God has the power to help or to overthrow."

    • Job 1:21 "... The Lord gave and the Lord takes away; may the name of the Lord be praised."

    • Job 12:9-24 "9 Which of all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this?
      10 In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.
      11 Does not the ear test words as the tongue tastes food?

      24 He deprives the leaders of the earth of their reason; he makes them wander in a trackless waste.

    • Joshua 23:15 "But just as all the good things the Lord your God has promised you have come to you, so he will bring on you all the evil things he has threatened, until the Lord your God has destroyed you from this good land he has given you."

    • Ecclesiastes 7:14 "When times are good, be happy; but when times are bad, consider this: God has made the one as well as the other. Therefore, no one can discover anything about their future."

    • Lamentations 3:38 "Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that both calamities and good things come?"

    • Isaiah 45:6-7 "6 ... I am the Lord, and there is no other. 7 I form the light and create darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster; I, the Lord, do all these things."

    • Jeremiah 18:5-10 "5 Then the word of the Lord came to me. 6 He said, “Can I not do with you, Israel, as this potter does?” declares the Lord. “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, Israel. 7 If at any time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be uprooted, torn down and destroyed, 8 and if that nation I warned repents of its evil, then I will relent and not inflict on it the disaster I had planned. 9 And if at another time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be built up and planted, 10 and if it does evil in my sight and does not obey me, then I will reconsider the good I had intended to do for it."

    • Micah 4:6 "“In that day,” declares the Lord, “I will gather the lame; I will assemble the exiles and those I have brought to grief."
    • Zechariah 8:14-15 "14 This is what the Lord Almighty says: “Just as I had determined to bring disaster on you and showed no pity when your ancestors angered me,” says the Lord Almighty, 15 “so now I have determined to do good again to Jerusalem and Judah. Do not be afraid."
    • Amos 3:6 "When a trumpet sounds in a city, do not the people tremble? When disaster comes to a city, has not the Lord caused it?"

  • Names of Jesus

    • Son of Man – representative of humanity:

      • Daniel 7:13 “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like the son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. He was given authority, glory and sovereign power…”

      • Luke 12:8 ““I tell you, whoever publicly acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God.”

      • John 3:13-15 “13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man. 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.

      • John 13:31 “… Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in him.

    • the "Word" – ultimate concept of truth in philosophical terms; Greek “logos” meaning word, speech, divine utterance. The philosophy of Heraclitus taught that man was controlled by the invisible order of the world or divine law through the logos.

      • John 1:1-3, 14 “1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

    • the one who reveals his character and power:

      • Psalms 103:7 "He made known his ways to Moses, his deeds to the people of Israel:

        • "ways" - who He is

          • Exodus 34:11 "Obey what I command you today."

          • "obey" - (pay attention, observe, keep, save) his ways

        • "deeds" - (acts) what He does

          • Hebrews 3:7-9 "So, as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you hear his voice, 8 do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion (10 spies in Canaan with bad report), during the time of testing in the wilderness, 9 where your ancestors tested and tried me, though for forty years they saw what I did."

            • "saw what I did" - provision for 40 years

    • Hebrew “Yehowah” or "Yehovah"

      • Means LORD, The Holy One of Israel, the Name of names

      • LORD God = Adonai Yehowah or Lord LORD

      • Genesis 2:4“4 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, when the Lord God made the earth and the heavens.”

      • Isaiah 45:5 “I am the LORD [Yehowah], and there is no other; apart from me there is no God [Elohim]. I will strengthen you, though you have not acknowledged me.”

      • “LORD God” in Hebrew is “Elohim” and “Yehowah”. It means God the Creator or “He causes to become” or “He will cause to become” in Genesis 2:4

      • In relation to his redemption and personal revelation of himself

    • The Greek word “Kurios” means “LORD” “Kurios” in Greek means “Lord”as in a person exercising absolute ownership rights; This states that Jesus is God in nature of the Trinity, but Jesus is not God the Father:

      • John 1:1-3 “1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.”

      • John 10:30-33” 30 I and the Father are one.”31 Again his Jewish opponents picked up stones to stone him, 32 but Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?”33 “We are not stoning you for any good work,” they replied, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.”

      • Romans 10:9-10 “9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.”

      • Philippians 2:5-11” 5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature [or in the form of] God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature [or the form] of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross! 9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

    • the "Messiah" (Hebrew) or the "Christ" (Greek):

      •  John 4:25-6 “25 The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”26 Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you - I am he.

      • Luke 2:25-32 “25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. 27 Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying: 29 “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace. 30 For my eyes have seen your salvation, 31 which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel.”

      • "Christ represents the thing that God hath done to redeem us." - Rev. S.M. Lockridge

    • The angel of the LORD (Old Testament) - pre-incarnate, physical form; an angel would never accepted someone bowing in worship to them, but the angel of the Lord always accepted worship in the fear of the Lord:

      • Genesis 3:8-10 “8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”10 He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”

      • Genesis 11:5 “But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building.”

      • Genesis 16:7-13 “7 The angel of the Lord found Hagar near a spring in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur. 10 The angel added, “I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.”13 She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.”

      • Genesis 18:1-19:1 “1 The LORD [Yahweh] appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day. 2 Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground. 17 Then the LORD said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do? 18 Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him. 19 For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just, so that the LORD will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.” 22 The men turned away and went toward Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the LORD. 1 The two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening.”

      • Genesis 22:11-18 “11 But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!”; “Here I am,” he replied. 12 “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.” 15 The angel of the Lord called to Abraham from heaven a second time 16 and said, “I swear by myself, declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, 18 and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.

      • Exodus 23:20-22 “20 “See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared. 21 Pay attention to him and listen to what he says. Do not rebel against him; he will not forgive your rebellion, since my Name is in him. 22 If you listen carefully to what he says and do all that I say, I will be an enemy to your enemies and will oppose those who oppose you.”

      • Judges 6:11-24 “11 The angel of the Lord came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, where his son Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to keep it from the Midianites. 12 When the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, he said, “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior.” 14 The Lord turned to him and said, “Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian’s hand. Am I not sending you?” 20 The angel of God said to him, “Take the meat and the unleavened bread, place them on this rock, and pour out the broth.” And Gideon did so. 21 Then the angel of the Lord touched the meat and the unleavened bread with the tip of the staff that was in his hand. Fire flared from the rock, consuming the meat and the bread. And the angel of the Lord disappeared. 22 When Gideon realized that it was the angel of the Lord, he exclaimed, “Alas, Sovereign Lord! I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face!” 23 But the Lord said to him, “Peace! Do not be afraid. You are not going to die.

      • Judges 13:16-18 “16 The angel of the Lord replied, “Even though you detain me, I will not eat any of your food. But if you prepare a burnt offering, offer it to the Lord.” (Manoah did not realize that it was the angel of the Lord.) 17 Then Manoah inquired of the angel of the Lord, “What is your name, so that we may honor you when your word comes true?” 18 He replied, “Why do you ask my name? It is beyond understanding.” 19 Then Manoah took a young goat, together with the grain offering, and sacrificed it on a rock to the Lord. And the Lord did an amazing thing while Manoah and his wife watched: 20 As the flame blazed up from the altar toward heaven, the angel of the Lord ascended in the flame. Seeing this, Manoah and his wife fell with their faces to the ground. 21 When the angel of the Lord did not show himself again to Manoah and his wife, Manoah realized that it was the angel of the Lord.”

      • John 17:5 “And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.

      • 1 Peter 1:2, “He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake.”

    • the "Prophet" identified by Moses:

      • Deuteronomy 18:14-22 "14 The nations you will dispossess listen to those who practice sorcery or divination. But as for you, the Lord your God has not permitted you to do so. 15 The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him. 16 For this is what you asked of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, “Let us not hear the voice of the Lord our God nor see this great fire anymore, or we will die.” 17 The Lord said to me: “What they say is good. 18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words in his mouth. He will tell them everything I command him. 19 I myself will call to account anyone who does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name. 20 But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, is to be put to death.” 21 You may say to yourselves, “How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the Lord?” 22 If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the Lord does not take place or come true, that is a message the Lord has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously, so do not be alarmed."

    • the "Redeemer":

      • Job 19:25-27 “25 I know that my redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth. 26 And after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God; 27 I myself will see him with my own eyes — I, and not another. How my heart yearns within me!”

      • Isaiah 54:5 “For your Maker is your husband, the Lord Almighty is his name, the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; he is called the God of all the earth.”

      • Galatians 4:4-5“4 But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.”

    • Salvation:

      • Acts 4:8-12 "8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people! 9 If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed, 10 then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. 11 Jesus is
        “‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’[found in Psalm 118:22] 12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”

  • Paul identified Jesus as Yahweh:

    • 1 Corinthians 8:4-6 "So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that an idol is nothing at all in the world and that there is no God but one. For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many ‘gods’ and many ‘lords’), yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live."

  • God in physical form at Jesus’ birth:

    • The term "from everlasting" is, according to A.R. Fausset, "the strongest assertion of infinite duration of which the Hebrew language is capable."

    • Micah 5:2 “"But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times [everlasting]."

    • Colossians 2:9 “For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form…”

    • Matthew 1:23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).

    • John 8:58 "Very truly I tell you," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!"

    • Philippians 2:5-11” 5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature [or in the form of] God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature[or the form] of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross! 9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name,10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

    • Isaiah 45:22-25 “22 “Turn to me and be saved, all you ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other. 23 By myself I have sworn, my mouth has uttered in all integrity a word that will not be revoked: Before me every knee will bow; by me every tongue will swear. 24 They will say of me, ‘In the Lord alone are deliverance and strength’ ‘All who have raged against him will come to him and be put to shame. 25 But all the descendants of Israel  will find deliverance in the Lord and will make their boast in him.”

  •  Jesus is superior to angels, but below God:

    • John 14:28 "You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I."

    • 1 Corinthians 15:27 “For he “has put everything under his feet.” Now when it says that “everything” has been put under him, it is clear that this does not include God himself, who put everything under Christ.”

    • Hebrews 1:4-14 “4 So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs. 5 For to which of the angels did God ever say,“ You are my Son; today I have become your Father”? Or again, “I will be his Father, and he will be my Son”? 6 And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, “Let all God’s angels worship him.” 7 In speaking of the angels he says, “He makes his angels spirits, and his servants flames of fire.” 8 But about the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom. 9 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy.” 10 He also says, “In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. 11 They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. 12 You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed. But you remain the same, and your years will never end.” 13 To which of the angels did God ever say, “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet”? 14 Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?"

  • The Way, the Truth and the Life:

    • John 14:6: Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

    • 1 John 5:20 We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life."

  • Firstborn of creation:

    • Exodus 13:11-16 “11 “After the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites and gives it to you, as he promised on oath to you and your ancestors, 12 you are to give over to the Lord the first offspring of every womb. All the firstborn males of your livestock belong to the Lord. 13 Redeem with a lamb every firstborn donkey, but if you do not redeem it, break its neck. Redeem every firstborn among your sons. 14 “In days to come, when your son asks you, ‘What does this mean?’ say to him, ‘With a mighty hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 15 When Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, the Lord killed the firstborn of both people and animals in Egypt. This is why I sacrifice to the Lord the first male offspring of every womb and redeem each of my firstborn sons.’ 16 And it will be like a sign on your hand and a symbol on your forehead that the Lord brought us out of Egypt with his mighty hand.”

  • With God at creation:

    • Isaiah 54:5 “For your Maker is your husband, the Lord Almighty is his name, the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; he is called the God of all the earth.”

    • John 1:3, ”Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.”

    • Proverbs 30:4 “Who has gone up to heaven and come down? Whose hands have gathered up the wind? Who has wrapped up the waters in a cloak? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is the name of his son? Surely you know!”

  • If Jews believe that the journey back to God does not require a redemptive savior, then why did God emphasize the return of a Messiah?

  • Moses stated in Deuteronomy 18:14-22 that " The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him." Characteristics shared by Moses and Jesus Christ:

    • Moses brought physical salvation for oppression, ceremonial system of atonement for sin and lead them to the Promised Land. Jesus did not relieve Roman oppression, gave spiritual atonement for sin and promises eternal life with him in heaven.

    • Moses was a mediator between Israel and God; Jesus intercedes for Jews and Gentiles

    • Moses spoke face to face with the LORD (Deut. 34:10-11, Numbers 12:6-8; Exodus 33:11).  To speak with Jesus is to speak face-to-face with God.

    • Moses introduced the Law or OT; Jesus introduced a new covenant or NT (Jeremiah 31:31-33)

    • Both were plotted to be killed at infancy by a ruler’s edict and had divine intervention.

    • Both were in Egypt at a young age

    • Both had supernatural control over water

    • Moses in the wilderness 40 years; Jesus in the wilderness 40 days

  • Isaiah 52:13-15 expounded on the testimony of Moses regarding the characteristics of the prophet in Chapters 49-53:

    • With his mouth he will wage war, not with armies

    • All nations will come to know God through him

    • He will be a new covenant

    • He will suffer

    • He will bring spiritual and everlasting salvation and justice

    • He will not be what people expected and they will reject him

    • The LORD's willed that his life be poured out as a guilt offering (Lev. 5:17) unto death

    • After his sacrifice, he will live again and others will be justified

    • He suffered for the sins of many, an intercessor for transgressors

    • He will deliver his people

  • Jesus will be the Judge:

    • Matthew 25:31-46 “31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. 34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you? 40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. 41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me. 44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you? 45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me. 46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

    • Acts 17:30-31 “30 In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. 31 For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.”

  • Jesus and the Holy Spirit are one:

    •  2 Corinthians 3:17 “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”

    • Revelation 5:6 "Then I saw a Lamb [Jesus], looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb {Jesus] had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth."

  • Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life:

    • John 11:25-26 "Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?

    • Acts 2:22-24 "22 “Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. 23 This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, d put him to death by nailing him to the cross. 24 But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.

    • Psalm 16:8-11 (Prophetic) " 8 I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken. 9 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, 10 because you [God the Father] will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful one [Jesus] see decay [resurrection from death]. 11 You make known to me the path of life [Jesus' path to the cross]; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand."

    • Isaiah 53:8-11 "8 By oppression and judgment he [Jesus] was taken away. Yet who of his generation protested? For he was cut off from the land of the living Jesus died on the cross]; for the transgression of my people he was punished. 9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth. 10 Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the Lord makes his life an offering for sin, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand. 11 After he has suffered, he will see the light of life [resurrection] and be satisfied; by his knowledge f my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities."

All three elements together:

  • 1 John 5:6-12 “6 This is the one who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies because the Spirit is the truth. 7 For there are three that testify: 8 the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement. 9 We accept human testimony, but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son. 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony. Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life."

  • John 14:6 "Jesus answered, “I am the way (Blood - atonement) and the truth (Spirit - truth) and the life (Water - eternal life). No one comes to the Father except through me."

  • John 19:28-34,  "28 Later, knowing that all was now been completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” 29 A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. 31 Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. 32 The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other. 33 But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water."

  • WATER

    • Jesus was born fully human, but was fully God:

    • Jesus is the source of living water:

      • John 5:10-13 "10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” 11“Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?” 13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

      • John 7:33-35 "37 On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified."

      • Isaiah 58:11 "The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail."

    • Baptism:

      • Baptism is not about the water; it's about the intent of the heart, recognition of our sin and understanding God's requirement for holiness. It does not provide or contribute to salvation.

      • For Jewish purposes, some event has or will take place whereby it becomes an intentional act involving immersion to address internal and spiritual uncleanness.

      • For the Christian:

        • Jesus' baptism was not for sin, but the beginning of his earthly ministry that would culminate with his death, burial and resurrection.

          • 1 Peter 3:18-22 "18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. 19 After being made alive, he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits — 20 to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, 21and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22 who has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him."

        • The sinner's baptism is a confession of belief in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, accepting his death on the cross for sin, and publicly confessing their faith in Jesus Christ.

          • Romans 6: 1-10 "1 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, a that we should no longer be slaves to sin — 7 because anyone who has died has been set free from sin. 8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. 10 The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God."

  • SPIRIT

    • Truth

      • John 1:14 "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth."

      • John 8:31-32 "31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” "

      • John 15:26 "“When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me."

      • John 16:13 "But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come."

      • Ephesians 1:13-14 "13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory."

  • BLOOD

    • Atonement for sin:

      • Hebrews 9:14-28 "14 How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, c so that we may serve the living God! 15 For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.16 In the case of a will, d it is necessary to prove the death of the one who made it, 17 because a will is in force only when somebody has died; it never takes effect while the one who made it is living. 18 This is why even the first covenant was not put into effect without blood. 19 When Moses had proclaimed every command of the law to all the people, he took the blood of calves, together with water, scarlet wool and branches of hyssop, and sprinkled the scroll and all the people. 20 He said, “This is the blood of the covenant, which God has commanded you to keep.” 21 In the same way, he sprinkled with the blood both the tabernacle and everything used in its ceremonies. 22 In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. 23 It was necessary, then, for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24 For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with human hands that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God’s presence. 25 Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. 26 Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world.   • Hebrew “ruach” from “ruwach” meaning spirit (of Elohim):

    • Genesis 1:2 “… and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.”

  • For "another advocate" or "allos paraklétos":

    • in Greek “allos” meaning another of the same kind or similar type and Counselor, but not a replacement for.

    • in Greek “paraklétos” meaning advocate, helper, intercessor (as in a court of law); to come along side:

    • John 14:16-17 “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever – the Spirit of truth.”

    • 1 Samuel 16:13 “So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came upon David in power.”

    • Judges 3:10: “The Spirit of the LORD came on him, so that he became Israel’s judge and went to war. The LORD gave Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram into the hands of Othniel, who overpowered him.”

    • Isaiah 59:21, “21 “As for me, this is my covenant with them,” says the Lord. “My Spirit, who is on you, will not depart from you, and my words that I have put in your mouth will always be on your lips, on the lips of your children and on the lips of their descendants—from this time on and forever,” says the Lord.”

    • Joel 2:28-29, “28 “And afterward, . Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.29 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days.”

    • Luke 2:25 “Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him.”

  • In the New Testament

    • Indwelling, Source comes from inside, permanent

    • Jesus promised not to leave the disciples (nor believers) alone. It is the Holy Spirit to fills the void of Jesus' physical presence and enables believers, through counsel, knowledge and revelation by a renewed heart and mind, to live for the Lord. Enabled to mean that believers can also suppress the influence and engagement of the Holy Spirit as it works within a believer. What separates the believer from the unbeliever is the Holy Spirit. Without the Holy Spirit, the believer could not love and obey God because their hearts are spiritually dead (Prophecy of the future gift of the Holy Spirit - Ezekiel 36:26-27). Without revelation from the Holy Spirit, would humanity "choose" God's way or will over their own (1 Corinthians 2:9-16)?  The Holy Spirit offers the small path (God's way) that diverges from the large road (Way of the world/flesh) found in Matthew 7:13-14 "13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it."

    • John 4:13-14: “13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.

    • John 7:37-39 “37 On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified."

    • John 14:16-17 “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever – the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

  • As the Spirit of Christ

    • John 15:5 ““I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

    • 1 Peter 1:10-11 “10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care, 11 trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of the Messiah and the glories that would follow.”

  • The ways that the Holy Spirit work:

    • John 3:5-7, “5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.

    • John 14:26, “26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

    • John 15:26, “26 “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father — he will testify about me. 27 And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning.

    • John 16:5-15, “5 but now I am going to him who sent me. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.

    • Acts 2:4-12, “4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues [languages] as the Spirit enabled them. 5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!”

And who is equal to such a task?”

  • Physical Description

    • Zechariah 4:2,10, “2 He asked me, “What do you see?” I answered, “I see a solid gold lampstand with a bowl at the top and seven lamps on it, with seven channels to the lamps … 10 Who dares despise the day of small things, since the seven eyes of the Lord that range throughout the earth will rejoice when they see the chosen capstone in the hand of Zerubbabel?”

    • Revelation 1:4, “… Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits before his throne,”

    • Revelation 4:5, “From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder. In front of the throne, seven lamps were blazing. These are the seven spirits of God.

        • Matthew 1:18,”This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about[d]: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.”

        • Luke 1:35, “The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.”

        • Job 28:12-13, 23-24, “12 But where can wisdom be found? Where does understanding dwell? 13 No mortal comprehends its worth; it cannot be found in the land of the living. 23 God understands the way to it and he alone knows where it dwells, … 24 for he views the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens.”

      • Spirit of Counsel – prophecy, truth and direction

        • 1 Samuel 10:9-11 "9 As Saul turned to leave Samuel, God changed Saul’s heart, and all these signs were fulfilled that day. 10 When he and his servant arrived at Gibeah, a procession of prophets met him; the Spirit of God came powerfully upon him, and he joined in their prophesying. 11 When all those who had formerly known him saw him prophesying with the prophets, they asked each other, “What is this that has happened to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?” "

        • John 14:15-17, 26 "15“If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate [counselor] to help you and be with you forever — 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him.         • Acts 11:11-12 "11“Right then three men who had been sent to me from Caesarea stopped at the house where I was staying. 12 The Spirit told me to have no hesitation about going with them. These six brothers also went with me, and we entered the man’s house."

        • Revelation 19:9-10 "9 Then the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!” And he added, “These are the true words of God.” 10 At this I fell at his feet to worship him.       • Spirit of Might – power and enabling

        • Isaiah 40:10, 26, 29-31, “10 See, the Sovereign Lord comes with power, and he rules with a mighty arm … 26 Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing … 29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. 30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; 31 but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

        • Ephesians 3:16 "I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being,"

      • Spirit of Knowledge – application of skills, facts and information

        • Deuteronomy 29:29, “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.”

        • Psalm 86:11, “Teach me your way, LORD, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.”

        • Deuteronomy 6:1-2, “1 These are the commands, decrees and laws the Lord your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, 2 so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the Lord your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life.

        • 1 Samuel 15:22, “But Samuel replied: “Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.”

  • Qualities seen in a believer whose life is directed by the Holy Spirit:

    • Galatians 5:16-25, “16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”

    • 2 Peter 1:5-7, “5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7 and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. 8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

  • If Jesus did not die, the Holy Spirit would not have come:

    • John 16:7 "But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you."

      • "... if I go ..." As a human, this path was difficult for Jesus, but he was obedient unto death:

        • John 17:2 " For you granted him authority over all people [Jews and Gentiles] that he might give [his choice of action] eternal life [through obedience to God's will] to all those you have given him [believers]."

          Luke 22:40-44 "41He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, 42“Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” 43An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground."

        • Philippians 2:7 "And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!"

    • Conditional statement: IF - I do not go away, THEN - the Holy Spirit does not come.

      • Observations:

        • The Holy Spirit is holy. The physical body is not holy. How can the Holy Spirit dwell in a believer's unholy body?  Answer: The blood of Jesus.  Without Jesus' death to atone for sin, the Holy Spirit could not live inside of us." How do we know that God approved of Jesus' atonement? Answer: His resurrection. The power of resurrection is the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus makes us clean by the shedding of his atoning blood and the Holy Spirit marks us clean for the future promise of our resurrection with Christ.

        • Isaiah 59:1-2 "1 Surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save,
          nor his ear too dull to hear. 2 But your iniquities have separated you from your God ..."

        • Isaiah 6:5-7 "5 “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.” 6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal [type of blood of Jesus] in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”

        • Hebrews 9:11-14 "11But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that are now already here, he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle [real one in heaven] that is not made with human hands, that is to say, is not a part of this creation. 12 He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption. 13 The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. 14 How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!"

        • Romans 1:4 "4 and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord."

        • Romans 4:18-25 to 5:1 "18 Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” 19 Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead—since he was about a hundred years old—and that Sarah’s womb was also dead. 20 Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, 21 being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised. 22 This is why “it was credited to him as righteousness.” 23 The words “it was credited to him” were written not for him alone, 24 but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousnessfor us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. 25 He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.         • Romans 8:9-11 "9 You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you.
